Mission
Basic Rights Oregon ensures that all lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer Oregonians experience equality by building a broad and inclusive politically powerful movement, shifting public opinion, and achieving policy victories.
Bottom Line for Portland
In the past year, we won a federal appeals case protecting transgender inclusion in public schools, helped create new guidelines to protect the dignity and safety of trans people in Oregon prisons, fought for LGBTQ-inclusive sex ed curriculum in Portland-area schools, and assisted over 500 people experiencing anti-LGBTQ discrimination.
“The work Basic Rights does creates opportunities for youth to be their authentic selves. The fact it’s now legally required to use students’ correct pronouns in schools makes a huge difference, and that’s thanks to Basic Rights. I’m so happy young people can be themselves today and not have to hide who they are, like I did.” —Max Western (they/them), a participant in Basic Rights Education Fund's Catalyst Transgender Leadership Development Program
