We advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children who are in the custody of the state and under the protection of the court. We dedicate our resources to recruiting, training and supporting citizen advocates to provide quality advocacy to as many children as we can.
Bottom Line for Portland
In Oregon, children enter the system at a rate nearly twice the national average. Today we serve Oregon’s largest group of children who are in protective custody of the court. There are over 4,000 children living in the foster care system in Multnomah, Washington and Columbia counties alone. We are only able to serve about 35% of the children in need in our service area, and we dedicate all our resources to closing the gap.
“For many foster children, a CASA is the only constant adult presence in their lives. Our advocates listen first. Then they act. They learn about the children by talking with everyone in that child’s life and inform judges and other adults as to what the child needs and what is in their best interest. During this pandemic, there are fewer eyes on these vulnerable youth, and an advocate is critical.” —Debi Sakamoto, program manager
