To provide vulnerable children a nurturing and sustained relationship with a professional mentor (called a Friend) who teaches positive values and has attainable expectations for each child to become a healthy, productive community member. Friends are full-time, salaried professionals who work with youth from kindergarten through high school graduation.
Bottom Line for Portland
This year, Friends enrolled a record 51 kindergartners in its program and now provides long-term professional mentoring to more than 450 youth across the Portland metro area. Eighty-three percent of its program graduates earn a high school diploma or GED, 93 percent avoid the juvenile justice system, and 98 percent avoid early parenting.
“My Friend gave me hope. She believed in me when my own family didn’t. She helped hone me into the woman that I am. She saw the potential in me, and in all honesty, she knew me better than I knew myself.”—Natasha Durant, program graduate and Friend
