Open School’s mission is to disrupt systemic oppression in education by leading a community based on equity, advocacy and academics. We support marginalized students on their journey to break limiting beliefs, learn to navigate systems, and build their life goals.
Bottom Line for Portland
Open School’s Step Up program provides equity-centered mentoring, tutoring and advocacy for 370 historically underserved students in three Portland Public Schools high schools. One hundred percent of Step Up’s seniors graduated in 2020. Through the COVID crisis, our deep relationships allow us to support families and keep kids engaged with school. We provide online counseling, resource deliveries, and advocacy for students navigating distance learning, isolation and economic hardship. Give!Guide funds will go directly to resources for BIPOC families.
“They are crucial for our Black and brown students. They are Black Lives Matter. They are there for those kids and those families to support them through everything, mental, social and emotional. They provide a community for those kids in the school.” —Tanesha Dawson, parent, Open School’s Step Up program at Franklin High School
