Peace In Schools

Brings mindfulness education to young people, fostering compassion, resilience and self-awareness at a time when school violence is widespread, and many teens struggle with feelings of isolation, depression and anxiety. Peace in Schools offers a positive alternative, leading to safer schools and a more peaceful world.

Bottom Line for Portland

In 2014, Peace in Schools launched the first for-credit, public high school mindfulness course in the nation. Its program is offered in six high schools in partnership with Portland Public Schools. This year, it will serve more than 1,200 teens. Ninety-seven percent of its students report significant positive changes in their emotional and mental health.

“Teens today are struggling. Peace in Schools teaches students self-awareness, acceptance, and compassion. Mindfulness transforms school culture. It should be in every high school. Happiness is about balance: we must educate young people in every capacity—mind, body and spirit.” —Brian Chatard, Wilson High School principal
