SMART (Start Making A Reader Today)

SMART pairs adult volunteers with children to provide reading support and books to take home and keep. SMART volunteers read one-on-one with students weekly during the school year, modeling a love of reading and building children’s reading skills and self-confidence.

Bottom Line for Portland

With the help of 5,000 community volunteers, SMART will reach 11,000 children this school year with weekly one-on-one reading sessions, giving them more than 150,000 new books to call their own. Ninety-five percent of students participating in SMART show improvement in literacy development measures; 75 percent of students improve in reading motivation benchmarks.

"I love, love, love SMART!!! I will forever be grateful for the boost SMART gave my son. It was his favorite part of the week all year. He has gained so much confidence, and he is such a reader now. " —SMART parent, Portland
