Village Gardens brings a spirit of hope to people by growing and sharing food, learning and teaching skills, and empowering community leadership.
Bottom Line for Portland
During the past year, Village Gardens launched a no-fee grocery delivery program and the new Neighbor-2-Neighbor Veggie Share program, where neighbors are receiving free weekly produce boxes harvested from the Seeds of Harmony Community Garden. Village Market employs 17 staff from our neighborhood, and over the past 12 months has served 109,712 customers, distributed 12,285 free apples, oranges and bananas through the Free Fruit for Kids program, and provided seniors and SNAP/WIC customers with $19,000 in access to fresh fruits and vegetables.
The first 10 gifts of $250 or more receive a hand-turned walnut bowl from Earthbound Industries.
“Building community is building relationships, knowing yourself, knowing your neighbor and from there knowing what you can do together.” —Eca-Etabo Wasongolo, Village Gardens community organizer
