Voz Workers’ Rights Education Project

Mission

To empower diverse day laborers and immigrants to improve their working conditions and protect civil rights through leadership development, organizing, education and economic opportunity.

Bottom Line for Portland

Since 2000, VOZ has recovered more than $600,000 in stolen wages for day laborers, created thousands of jobs through the Worker Center and provided ESL classes, work-skills trainings, computer classes, art classes, and health and safety trainings. Together with its allies, VOZ has successfully stopped the deportation of many day laborers and other immigrants.

“I want to express my appreciation for the good work of the staff, volunteers and day laborers at the MLK Jr. Worker Center. The center is not a labor agency. It is a community center that puts people to work.”—Eugene Wickersham, day laborer
