For nearly 75 years, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Portland has been at the forefront of providing youth development programs and services for underserved youth, ages 6 to 18, who come from a wide variety of backgrounds, and 2020 is no different. Even though 2020 has brought uncertainties and disruption to the communities we serve, our top priority have not changed: to help ensure kids have access to enrichment opportunities and resources to build Great Futures.

The best way to preserve democracy is to teach democracy. Oregon’s youth need to know how our government works, how to speak with respect for opposing points of view, and how to advocate with conviction and clear thinking. To that end, we reached 1,155 teachers and 144,185 students in classrooms, communities, competitions, and virtual spaces in the last school year. With so many challenges facing our schools and our communities today, the need for this work is more critical than ever.

College Possible makes college admission and success possible for students from low-income backgrounds through an intensive curriculum of coaching and support. College Possible is a proven, research-based program driven by the idea that Oregon’s students should go as far as their talent and motivation can take them.
Community Transitional School $7,128 raised so far.
Community Transitional School is a private nonprofit pre-K-8th grade school dedicated to educating children whose families are homeless or in transition throughout Portland. CTS provides at-risk children with a stable educational environment that promotes their personal and academic growth.

Girls Build inspires curiosity and confidence in girls through the world of building. This is accomplished through summer camps and after-school programming. Girls Build is proud to give scholarships to half of our participants, including free programming for foster kids.

The Library Foundation $8,707 raised so far.
Gifts this fall will enable the library to purchase more than 10,000 diverse children’s books, selected to reflect the families, languages, and cultures in our community. A love for reading is rooted in connection. When children see themselves and families like their own in books, they are more likely to become lifelong readers. The library’s children’s literacy experts work closely with Head Starts, schools, free clinics, WIC, and immigrant/refugee programs to reach vulnerable families.

Open School’s mission is to lead an educational community based on equity, advocacy and academics. We support marginalized students on their journey to break limiting beliefs, learn to navigate systemic oppression, and build their life goals.
Oregon Robotics Tournament & Outreach Program $755 raised so far.
ORTOP opens doors to the worlds of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) for Oregon’s youth by providing educational opportunities featuring robotics, with special emphasis on maximizing the diversity of those participating. ORTOP is the Oregon partner for FIRST.

PYB helps low-income youth break the cycle of poverty through vocational training, high school completion, counseling, and long term support. This year we are more focused than ever on our students' mental and physical health, meeting their basic needs, and helping them find jobs.

Working toward our vision that all children have the right to read and succeed, Reading Results serves first, second and third graders who need extra reading support. Reading Results partners with schools serving students living on low incomes and students of color to provide an online reading acceleration program.

Experts agree that reading support and access to books are key ingredients for literacy success. For 29 school years, SMART Reading has provided one-on-one reading support and new books to kids across Oregon. While this year will look different, we’ll continue fostering a love of reading and learning by getting books into the hands of kids who need them most and providing virtual reading sessions and resources.
