Blosser Center for Dyslexia Education

Mission

The Blosser Center’s mission is to help students with dyslexia and other struggling readers reach their potential through the power of literacy. Blosser uses the Orton-Gillingham approach - the gold standard in literacy instruction- to teach students and train teachers.

Bottom Line for Portland

Did you know that over half of Oregon's third and seventh graders struggle with reading proficiency? Twenty percent of these students have dyslexia, a learning disability that affects language processing. Another 40% are currently reading below grade level. That means, in Oregon today, in a typical class of 24, around 15 students struggle to recognize words and read simple paragraphs.

At the Blosser Center for Dyslexia Resources, we’re committed to changing these statistics and honoring the NAACP's declaration of literacy as a civil right. Our mission is to empower students with dyslexia, along with all struggling readers, to reach their full potential through the power of literacy. We offer:

  • 1:1 Orton-Gillingham tutoring
  • Intensive 1:1 literacy instruction for middle and high school students
  • Multisensory math classes
  • Partnerships with Title I schools to provide Orton-Gillingham tutoring
  • A 4-week "Rev Up Your Reading" summer program for struggling readers in the community
  • Teacher training in the science of reading to help meet the demand for well-trained tutors

Blosser is also listed by the Oregon Department of Education as an approved provider of dyslexia training for classroom educators.

We build literacy skills, boost confidence, and open doors to educational opportunities, helping students take full advantage of their potential—because every child deserves the power of literacy.

"After three years in Special Education, with my child’s self-esteem deteriorating rapidly, I found an Orton-Gillingham tutor who saved his life!  Within six months of tutoring, my son was reading!" -Blosser Center Parent and former board member

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Blosser is an equal-opportunity organization. We believe literacy is a civil right. Blosser's programs are guided by the voices of the students and families we serve. Over 60% of our staff and board are parents of students with dyslexia or have dyslexia themselves.
