BRAVO Youth Orchestras

OCT Qualified
BIPOC-Led Organization

Mission

BRAVO serves diverse populations of students by providing mentorship opportunities and multiple pathways to engage in the arts. Through its programs, BRAVO promotes social justice, provides social/emotional support and boosts academic achievement while supporting the development of creative, confident, community-minded artists.

Bottom Line for Portland

When donating to BRAVO, the entire North Portland community of students and families are positively impacted. Our students demonstrate significantly better school attendance, are twice as likely to pass reading and math assessments, and half as likely to be suspended. In a typical year, BRAVO provides over 60 concerts and performances--many of them in a neighborhood underserved by most arts and cultural organizations.

Quote

“Teach children the beauty of music, and music will teach them the beauty of life” --Jose Antonio Abreu, founder of El Sistema in Venezuela

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

BRAVO recently hired one of Portland's best-known male vocalists, Alonzo Chadwick, as our new Executive Director. He brings over 15 years of experience working in nonprofits serving children and families. This transition marks a significant turning point in BRAVO's multi-year engagement with issues of equity, diversity and inclusion. Our ongoing work includes a Racial Equity Training Professional Development series for all staff and new curricular components that center student voice and choice. Equity is integrated into the core values of the organization, removing typical barriers to participation so that traditionally marginalized children and families can access the best music education right in their communities.
