Chess for Success
Mission
To develop community, connection, and confidence by learning and playing chess, helping students build the academic, social, and emotional skills necessary for future success.
Bottom Line for Portland
Chess for Success has been an integral part of the Portland educational community since 1996, founded to address educational disparities affecting marginalized groups in the city. We’ve now expanded our reach beyond Portland and recently began to include DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) principles in our curriculum to support students’ mental health. This year, we’re running nearly 50 clubs in the metro area and 50 more across the state, Southwest Washington, and Hawaii.
Quote
"It's not just about chess; it's about watching them grow into thoughtful individuals who value teamwork and respect as much as a clever checkmate. I'm a full-time 4th grade teacher who stays after school for two hours to teach chess; even after a long day, chess club is the best part of my day. The time is so intellectually and emotionally nourishing for our students."
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
Inclusion drives our mission at Chess for Success. We're committed to fostering an environment where every young individual can thrive, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, age, gender, sexual orientation, ability, or socioeconomic background. Our culture values respect, integrity, and honesty, promoting an array of backgrounds, insights, and experiences.
