Friends of the Children-Portland

BIPOC-Led Organization

Mission

Time and relationships are the most valuable resources we have, and that is what Friends of the Children-Portland dedicates to the youth we walk alongside. We’ve taken mentoring out of the volunteer realm and offer one to one guidance from professional, salaried mentors called Friends. Youth in our program have a caring and supportive Friend from kindergarten to high school graduation.

Our mission: Impacting generational change by empowering youth who are facing the greatest obstacles through relationships with professional mentors – 12+ years, no matter what.

Bottom Line for Portland

We offer holistic support to the youth we walk alongside. We build long-term relationships and provide experiences that enrich their journey through life. Our goal is to provide hope-inspiring services that mitigate trauma and promote well-being, in every area of life.
91% of the families we work with say FriendsPDX has helped support their child’s school success. 96% of the youth we work with told us they were able to accomplish things they’re proud of, and they have a strong sense of belonging to their culture.

Quote

"[My Friends] Rose and Honna have helped me to go through challenges that I’ve encountered, giving me insight from different views. They actually listen to what I’m saying and they take it apart. They give me advice without telling me what to do. They let me make the decision for myself and trust me to make the decision for myself." - Amen, program graduate.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

We acknowledge the historical and present injustices impacting marginalized communities. We demand equity from ourselves and from our community. We insist that all people have the necessary support to achieve all of their hopes and dreams. We amplify the voices of our children, families and communities. We bring together different experiences, skills and backgrounds to provide opportunities to overcome personal, systemic and institutional barriers.
