Greater Than
Mission
Greater Than seeks to transform public education for underrepresented and historically excluded students by providing them with individualized holistic supports from pre-K through high school and beyond to ensure they can overcome systemic barriers to thrive in school, college, and career.
Bottom Line for Portland
Greater Than currently serves in two under-resourced communities: Rockwood in East Multnomah County and Downtown Hillsboro in Washington County. While the communities are more than 30 miles apart, they share many strengths and are both high opportunity communities. Both neighborhoods have been impacted by systemic racism, holding back families from thriving to their fullest potential. Our work is crucial to the Portland metro area because we address systemic inequities in education. By providing targeted support and resources, we strive to level the playing field and ensure all students have access to quality education, regardless of their background or socioeconomic status. Our programs not only foster the growth and potential of individual students but also contribute to building a more just and equitable society. We are intent on moving from a system of holding power over community to holding power with community. By investing in the educational success of underrepresented students in Rockwood and Downtown Hillsboro, we are strengthening the fabric of the communities for all residents of the Portland metro area.
Quote
“[Greater Than knows] what’s been going on with their students from elementary school through college. They stay with you.”

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
We actively promote diversity, equity, and inclusion by providing targeted support to communities historically underserved due to socioeconomic status, race, identity, or ability. We prioritize diversity, equity, and inclusion through culturally responsive programming, hiring practices that reflect the communities we serve, and ongoing training to foster understanding and sensitivity among staff. We center parent and student voices in our planning and decision-making processes and regularly assess our practices and policies through an equity lens.
