Mission

Alberta House is intended for all and is focused on elevating voices that have struggled for many years to be heard. This is your house. Our mission is to reach and engage voices from our community that have been disproportionately impacted by Oregon’s social, economic, and racial injustices. Surrounded by and intertwined with the reminders of a complex history marked by vibrancy, resiliency, and ingenuity, as well as racism, exclusion, and trauma, we open the doors of this historic building for the community to explore.

Bottom Line for Portland

We extend our space and services to everyone in our community, emphasizing access for BIPOC, LGBTQIA+ folx, immigrants, and refugees, providing accessible spaces and affordable use for all. We host local arts, cultural, and educational organizations, providing space for performance, exhibition, education, meetings, and community fellowship. We develop in-house programming to highlight, celebrate, and preserve the Black community’s experience, history, and contributions to our neighborhood, the City of Portland, and the world.

Quote

"It has been a busy time in my life and I haven't been letting myself feel my emotions. By the end of this recital, I could feel my emotions starting to flow again. I'm very glad I came." - Community Member who attended Black Opera, Produced by Alberta House and directed by Vin Shambry

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Since our rebirth as Historic Alberta House, all of our leadership positions are held by members of the BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ communities. We focus on preserving this historic space for all, regardless of cost, to serve the local community, with emphasis on traditionally underserved populations. We provide over $10,000 worth of free performance, art, and meeting space to our community annually.
