Mission

Transforming Portland's relationship with the Willamette River.

Bottom Line for Portland

Founded in 2010 as a volunteer-driven advocacy group, Human Access Project (HAP) helps people embrace, cherish, and preserve the Willamette River and gain more access to it. In short, we help folks “get into their river.” Our work includes government advocacy, beach development, cleanups, helping solve algae problems, installing swim ladders and bike racks at docks, and more.

We drove the opening of Poet’s Beach and Tom McCall Beach and recently (after six years of advocacy) negotiated the conversion of the Kevin Duckworth Dock from a motorized dock to a non-motorized swimming dock. We privately fund-raised to add eight swim ladders for this dock, and add bike racks. Our top priority now is mitigating the Harmful Algae Bloom at Ross Island, which affects usage of the river. We’re working with DSL, BES and DEQ to develop a solution. This year, we raised $9,000 to hire OSU for 2D modeling of the Ross Island lagoon to research the potential of tides in mitigating Harmful Algae Blooms. For near ten years, HAP has hosted The Big Float, our annual summer fundraiser, which has brought over 20,000 people to the Willamette River. HAP also runs the River Hugger Swim Team. The group, open to the public, swims across the Willamette weekday mornings.
