Minds Matter Portland
Mission
Minds Matter connects driven and determined students from low-income families with the people, preparation, and possibilities to succeed in college, create their future, and change the world.
Bottom Line for Portland
Our organization aims to improve the academic outcomes of low-income students attending high-school in the Portland Metro Area, as well as create a more equitable school system. By donating to our organization, college becomes possible for a greater number of students attending Portland's schools. Donating to our organization helps more students succeed academically and obtain a post-secondary degree, which in turn betters the Portland Metro area.
Quote
“As I went through the application and interview process, I could not have imagined the immense impact Minds Matter would have, and continues to have, on the rest of my life. An impact that I will be forever grateful for, and one that has altered not only my academic path, but has shaped me into the person I am today.” - Melissa M
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
The majority of students our organization supports self-identify as African American, Black, and Hispanic/Latinx. We actively seek and recruit mentors and tutors who mirror our student population and relate to their lived experience, strive to support students from low income backgrounds, and acknowledge the interconnectedness between socioeconomic status, race, and number of parents/guardians. We are committed to helping students overcome systemic barriers that influence their admission to college as well as their college experience. We hope that by reducing financial burdens and preparing students for SAT/ACT exams, we are making the college application process more equitable and accessible.
