Mission: Citizen

BIPOC-Led Organization

Mission

Our goal is to guide immigrants in the Portland Metro area through naturalization and prepare them to pass the U.S. citizenship test. We strive to encourage civic engagement in America’s future citizens and help increase access to more opportunities.

Bottom Line for Portland

During our 14 years of operation as a student-run nonprofit, we have taught over a thousand students and have provided hundreds of scholarships to our students, leading dozens of them to pass the citizenship test and become US citizens. We acknowledge that the naturalization process is designed for the privileged, due to the financial burden and time commitment required to study and prepare for the exam. Thus, we strive to make this process as easy as possible for the underprivileged members of our community. Quote

“$725. That's the current cost of naturalization. Mission: Citizen is dedicated to making citizenship as accessible as possible for immigrants in the Portland Metro area.” - Cherry Chen, Co-Executive Director

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

By expanding access to citizenship and the rights and benefits it confers, Mission: Citizen is amplifying voices and helping enfranchise members of Portland Metro communities. Our teachers utilize their diverse backgrounds and bilingualism to give students opportunities that support their learning, instead of a standardized lecture format that many struggle with. We foster an environment with numerous unique perspectives and lived experiences to help immigrants achieve their citizenship goals.
