Northeast Emergency Food Program (NEFP)

Mission

Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon (EMO) brings together diverse communities of faith to learn, serve, and advocate for justice, peace, and the integrity of creation. EMO meets the immediate needs of communities in the greater Portland area through our six direct service programs, while seeking long-term solutions through state-wide public policy and advocacy work.

Bottom Line for Portland

Northeast Emergency Food Program maintains a philosophy of abundance to make sure everyone that comes here gets all the food they need. Each week, 50,000 pounds of food comes through our doors to serve our clients. Our vision is that people will no longer need the services of a food pantry, but as long as they do, NEFP will provide the food they need in a compassionate and dignified way.

Quote

A young mother of three, upon leaving NEFP with a cart full of food supplies and diapers, said, “I don’t know what I would have done without you!”

One day, an NEFP volunteer who was helping clients to their cars after shopping was told by a client: “I wish I was treated everywhere like the way I am treated here at NEFP”.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

NEFP serves a diverse clientele - the majority of our clients are English-, Spanish-, Chinese-, and Vietnamese-speaking – but we have representation from Russian-, Ukrainian-, Persian-, Arabic-, and Laotian-speaking communities. We developed a third shopping day to accommodate the Spanish-speaking population in our neighborhood. Latin Night has become a favorite for staff, volunteers and clients. We also recently hired a Pantry Assistant who is fluent in Mandarin, Cantonese and Taishanese to make our clients feel comfortable at our pantry.
