Raphael House of Portland
Mission
Raphael House provides a foundation of hope for a life free from domestic violence. We offer life-saving, gender-inclusive services to adults and children escaping abuse—to help survivors achieve the safety and stability they deserve—while also working to prevent future abuse through education.
Bottom Line for Portland
We help families end the cycle of domestic violence and rebuild their lives after abuse.
Annually, Raphael House reaches more than 5,243 survivors and community members through emergency shelter in a confidential location (25% of all local bed space for survivors), housing assistance, and ongoing support, along with violence and sex-trafficking prevention education plus confidential advocacy for teens in all 9 Portland Public high schools.
As Portland's housing crisis has escalated and rates of abuse have spiked, we’ve continually offered 24-hour shelter and hotline assistance. Last year alone we provided a safe haven to nearly 100 adults, children, and pets escaping violence; assisted 1,260 callers; and supported 560+ survivors in staying safe, stable, and housed.
We also distributed 29,100 pounds of food; facilitated 261 survivor support groups; and helped ensure that 90% of families across our programs have maintained their housing!
Quote
“I probably wouldn’t be alive if we didn’t get here. I can’t express how grateful I am for everything Raphael House has done to help me and my kids. We're doing amazing - better every day.” —Jenell, survivor, mom, and past shelter resident
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
Domestic violence affects all people and communities, but we clearly see that people who have been historically barred from accessing resources experience greater barriers to safety, especially Black, Brown, Indigenous, and Queer families. That’s why we have designed our programming to be a safe, welcoming space for survivors of every gender identity, sexuality, race, ethnicity, immigration status, primary language, ability, and age. We are committed to always learning, improving, and growing in pursuit of a more just and equitable world.
