Mission

Our mission is to bring refurbished bicycles and bike education to underrepresented populations while lowering carbon emissions in our region. We believe bicycles are a vital part of a thriving and sustainable community.

Bottom Line for Portland

Research shows there are clear sensory-motor, social, and emotional benefits for all children and adults with access to bikes. Improvements to personal health and the health of the planet are tied to choosing a pedaling way of life.

According to the US Census Bureau, low-income workers are more likely to rely on bikes for transportation and more biking accidents occur in low-income neighborhoods. Access to a functional bike is a barrier to biking, especially for those making less than $40k per year. Bicycles can significantly impact a household's budget. The average annual operating cost of a bicycle is $308.00 compared to $8,220.00 for the average car.

Portland’s cost of living is 24% higher than the national average and transportation expenses like bus fares and gas prices are 22% higher. Low-income families can spend as much as 55% of their budget on transportation. Furthermore, a large portion of potential minority riders don’t bike because they don’t feel safe doing so. As a result, they miss out on the health and economic benefits of biking. These realities highlight the need for programming to make biking safer and more equitable and to ensure such initiatives reach low-income and BIPOC communities.

Nearly 40,000 participants are served through our programs each year.

We give away 10,000 plus refurbished bikes annually making us the largest free bike distribution on the West Coast.

Quote

“Our refugee clients were amazed to receive free bikes for their families. Coming to a new country with only a few suitcases, and starting a new life in Portland, they are grateful to have freedom of movements."

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

We believe in the right to mobility for all people.  We strive to cultivate partnerships to help us reach into underrepresented communities and ensure the bulk of our programming serves marginalized groups. 71% of those we serve fall under the federal poverty line and 62% are from minority populations.
