Sam Day Foundation
Sam Day Foundation strives to fund research for rare pediatric cancers and life-giving experiences so kids with cancer can survive and live well.
Bottom Line for Portland
Sam Day Foundation is striving to fill a gap in pediatric cancer research with an emphasis on brain tumors and sarcomas. Our work connects the nation’s best research with our kids here in Oregon, and helps local researchers make contributions to be shared with the rest of the nation. In the past year, over $300,000 has supported pediatric cancer researchers at OHSU (in collaboration with Oregon State University), the Children’s Cancer Therapy Development Institute, and Seattle Children’s Hospital. An innovative precision medicine program based in North Carolina has become available here in Portland due to our advocacy, funding, and engagement in the greater childhood cancer community. We are just getting started.
"My son, Charlie, died last year at age 6 from a pediatric brain tumor. He endured his tumor and toxic but treatments for more than half his life. We know firsthand how much we need better treatments so kids like Charlie survive and thrive. Sam Day Foundation funds innovative research with a high likelihood of moving new treatments for some of the most brutal childhood cancers forward into clinical trials." - Katie Shriver, parent
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
Cancer doesn't discriminate but access to the most hopeful, cutting-edge opportunities can be difficult for disadvantaged families, including single parent households. Only the most socially supported and financially equipped families can relocate to hospitals around the country to access promising clinical trials.
By generating pediatric cancer research locally, more kids with cancer will have access to hope, and the potential for healing, while progress toward cures will also accelerate.
