Stone Soup PDX

Mission

Stone Soup empowers people experiencing barriers to employment to achieve self-reliance through training for careers in the foodservice industry.

Bottom Line for Portland

Stone Soup PDX provides individuals with barriers to employment with the training and resources necessary to gain and retain stable jobs. These barriers may include housing insecurity, income insecurity, recent interaction with the justice system and other circumstances that have contributed to an individual being unemployed or underemployed.

Stone Soup PDX also feeds people. Over 1,100 meals are thoughtfully prepared and fed to Portlanders living in shelter, transitional housing, and those receiving mental health services each week. We know that eating delicious, nutritious, and filling meals not only improves health outcomes, but is also a source of comfort and dignity for those facing trauma and instability.

Quote

"Being able to be around new people, learn new things, and just continue to develop myself, better myself, was a huge part of completing my time here. My overall experience with Stone Soup PDX is..I'm in love, I'm grateful, I'm thankful and I'm humbled.”

-Denzel, Stone Soup PDX Graduate

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

At Stone Soup PDX, we view food as a powerful medium for sharing culture and history and also engage in tough conversations about how classism, racism, and sexism have shaped the culinary history of America. Additionally, Stone Soup PDX recognizes that often the barriers to employment our participants face are linked to mental or physical disabilities. As a result, we created a reasonable accommodation system that allows us to adjust our program to meet the needs of these participants.
