Bottom Line for Portland
Outdoor School is the hands-on science field study for Portland-metro area 5th and 6th grade students. At Outdoor School, students leave their classrooms and spend up to a week outdoors exploring Oregon’s diverse ecosystems in real life. Donating to Friends of Outdoor School helps to ensure that all 17,000 area students have access to a safe, inclusive, education experience at Outdoor School. Friends of Outdoor School’s purpose is to connect, support, and advocate for all of Oregon’s diverse students to learn at inclusive and accessible Outdoor School programs that contribute to educational development, inspire youth, and promote personal growth. By engaging individuals, elected officials, agencies, businesses, organizations, educators, Outdoor School programs and sites, we are building a strong network to support Outdoor School and the students who attend. We believe that Outdoor School should be a place where every child belongs. Outdoor School lays the foundation for students to understand how to be good stewards of the environment and often leads students to pursue careers in the science and education sectors. Supporting Friends of Outdoor School means that more Oregon students attend Outdoor School which leads to a better Oregon for everyone!

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
At its best, Outdoor School (ODS) transforms classroom education by creating a model of inclusion and student engagement. Historically marginalized communities have been made to feel unwelcome in parks, outdoor spaces, and science, technology, engineering, and math education. We work to ensure that while at ODS, everyone can feel safe, included, and experience meaningful outdoor STEM education. The systems we work within most--education, philanthropy, and advocacy--are inherently racist and inequitable. These systems have created barriers that marginalized and harmed many members of our communities and kept people from fully participating in ODS. Educational programming that includes diverse perspectives and voices is a more complete experience for youth. This is especially important when acknowledging the traditional tribal territories on which all programming takes place. In our day-to-day practices, we seek to be good stewards of the land we inhabit and to make decisions that do not cause harm to others or the environment. We are committed to examining our role in these systems and working to promote more equitable, diverse, and inclusive access to resources, programming, and fully-accessible and welcoming learning spaces.
