1000 Friends of Oregon

Mission

Working with Oregonians to enhance our quality of life by building livable urban and rural communities, protecting family farms and forests, and conserving natural areas.

Bottom Line for Portland

In the Portland metro area, 1000 Friends of Oregon has a 50-year track record of impact. We led Portland for Everyone, helping reverse a century of discriminatory zoning and establish residential infill – some of the most progressive and equitable housing policy in the nation – in addition to creating forward-thinking statewide housing legislation. We constantly partner with communities in the metro region and across the state to fight attempts by multi-billion-dollar corporations to expand in ways that endanger our most vulnerable neighborhoods. And we’ve hosted five – going on six! – cohorts that have trained more than 100 metro-area residents to become land use planning advocates at local and state levels.

Quote

"As a former student at Parkrose High School, I know how important it is to ensure my neighborhood is safe and healthy not only for my family but for future generations. The Prologis freight warehouse puts my community's safety and future at risk. I’m proud to be part of the fight against this project, but I couldn’t do it without the support of 1000 Friends of Oregon. They took action to protect my neighborhood, filing a legal challenge against the warehouse. When the City ignored our concerns, 1000 Friends of Oregon stepped up. Together, we’re advocating for a better future for the Parkrose neighborhood that I love."

- Celeste Ruiz, Parkrose High Graduate, class of 2024

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Bad land use decisions directly and disproportionately impact communities of color and other marginalized folks – things like redlining, displacement, building homes in wildfire-risk areas, and placing industrial facilities next to homes where folks with low incomes live. Guided by our equity policy, we work alongside these communities to prevent further harm: repealing restrictive zoning codes, increasing affordable housing and transit where people already live and away from wildfire risk, and closing loopholes that cause rural gentrification and displacement on farmland.

Thoughtful land use – especially transportation and housing policies – are crucial to ensuring safe, effective, and healthy communities for all Oregonians.
