Artists Repertory Theatre
Artists Repertory Theatre’s mission is to produce intimate, provocative theatre and provide a home for a diverse community of artists and audiences to take creative risks.
Bottom Line for Portland
Gifts to Artists Rep help nurture its breakthrough vision for sharing intimate, provocative and essential stories in live theatre performances and digital media projects. Since June 2020 (during the COVID pandemic), ART hired 244 artists who have worked on 56 projects - and counting. Gifts also enable this work to be accessible to everyone in our community, regardless of income. ART’s education programs engage students of all ages with the power of theatre. Through its innovative ArtsHub program, ART is helping meet the challenge of Portland’s lack of affordable performance and rehearsal space by providing programs and services that help smaller arts and community organizations survive and thrive. Your gift helps ART breakthrough to this innovative model for collaborative artistic support.
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
ART is committed to leading as an Anti-Racist Theatre. Clearly, Portland, our nation, and our industry are confronted by the long overdue response to racial inequity. The arts will be part of the transformation needed to heal our community. Dámaso Rodríguez was the first Latinx artistic director of a professional/LORT (League of Resident Theatres) in the US. His creative team has prioritized plays by Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC), women, and LGBTQIA+ playwrights. In 2020, in response to a proposal by nine Black artists who had a history collaborating at ART, the company founded DNA: Oxygen (named in honor of the many Black people whose final words were “I can’t breathe”). This newly established initiative has inspired the development and production of new work generated by, led by, and featuring BIPOC artists, as well as the creation of a formal mentorship program. ART currently has 16 DNA: Oxygen artistic projects underway for development or release to the public. In addition to artistic initiatives, ART’s administrative policies and board bylaws have been revised to foster a multiracial,anti-biased, anti-racist ART.
