Mental Health & Addiction Association of Oregon (MHAAO)

BIPOC-Led Organization

Mission

The Mental Health & Addiction Association of Oregon (MHAAO) is an inclusive, community-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Our mission is to promote self-directed recovery and wellness for all, honoring the voice of lived experience.

As a peer-run agency, we are the communities we serve, just at a different stage in our journey. We help individuals set and meet their recovery goals, such as getting into detox, treatment, securing housing, and finding employment. We support people in being empowered to direct their own path forward to recovery, health, and healing. The path to recovery is not walked alone. Together, we grow, transform, and thrive.

Bottom Line for Portland

At MHAAO, we build trust and spark hope – at the individual and community levels – knowing that recovery and healing are possible for all.  All of us are a part of the solution.

We are currently undertaking our most ambitious effort yet: a peer-run Recovery Campus offering a safe, low-barrier space for Portlanders experiencing addiction and mental health challenges. The Recovery Campus will offer holistic recovery services and housing all in one place – addressing the highest needs we are seeing in Portland and serving some of the most marginalized members of our community. Every individual journey to recovery begins with hope and that is what we provide at MHAAO.

Quote

“This work really does save lives. My lived experiences have provided me so many tools to navigate life and I can now share those tools with others.” - MHAAO Peer Wellness Specialist

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

We are a women and BIPOC-led organization dedicated to advancing justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion within all of our programs. We recognize that there are disparities in our community that have been created and maintained by systems of oppression; MHAAO is committed to the ongoing work necessary to combat these barriers. Our services are culturally responsive, trauma-informed, rooted in social justice and empowerment, and offered at no charge.
