North by Northeast Community Health Center improves health outcomes & advances health equity by offering primary care services and health education/promotion focused on the Black/African American community.

Bottom Line for Portland

Our work matters to Portland because Black Portlanders and their health matter. Despite decades of healthcare transformation in Oregon, including the expansion of Medicaid, our Black neighbors still face racism, discrimination, and untrustworthy practices when seeking healthcare. When Black adults walk through our doors, they know immediately that our organization is for them, from the makeup of our staff to the artwork on our walls and music we play, to the events we show up at in the community. 2023 marks our 18th year proclaiming that Black Health Matters and doing everything we can to make that statement true, for our patients, the broader community, and our whole city.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

All of our work is guided by our Anti-Racism Policy, which provides guidelines for implementing new projects and decision-making with a racial equity awareness and lens. We measure the success of our diversity practices by the extent to which our staff, board and vendors mirror the racial & economic diversity of our patient population, and we measure the success of our equity practices by the rate of health disparities within our patient population.Currently, 85% of our Board and staff are Black, and our health outcomes show no racial disparity.
