Mission

The Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education (OJMCHE) explores the legacy of the Jewish experience in Oregon, teaches the enduring and universal relevance of the Holocaust, and provides opportunities for intercultural conversations.

Bottom Line for Portland

OJMCHE and the Oregon Holocaust Memorial, which the museum stewards, provide space for people to come together to learn and discuss complex topics while respectfully exploring alternative perspectives. We educate adults and students about the Holocaust and other genocides; connect the Jewish experience to larger issues of diversity and discrimination against religious, ethnic, and cultural minorities; and provide tools of resistance to confront hate, racism and persecution. OJMCHE empowers our audience to study the past as a way to understand the present and explore the future.

Quote

“I think discrimination can start with little things. It can start with as much as racial jokes or religious jokes. It can start with just small hatred which can grow into a big one. And I feel that the way to fight is to educate the young people. To let them know what discrimination can do. I think we all have to educate the children, and in our own way, we all have to fight discrimination.”

–Eva Aigner, Member of OJMCHE’s Speakers’ Bureau and child survivor of the Budapest Ghetto
