Operation Nightwatch provides evening hospitality for Portland’s unhoused population to promote community, dignity, and social connection.
Bottom Line for Portland
On any given night, there are thousands of unsheltered people living on the streets in the Portland metro area. Operation Nightwatch Portland cares for approximately 300 of these unhoused folks every week at our Downtown Hospitality Center, at night, when warmth and connection are particularly hard to come by. In non-COVID times, we welcome folks into our “community living room,” providing a place of respite from the elements and relief from the loneliness that often accompanies houselessness. During the pandemic, we been able to continue to provide blankets, clothing, hygiene supplies, and drop in mental health services. Operation Nightwatch is a small, but mighty organization. For more than forty years we have offered radical hospitality to Portland's most marginalized communities.
A donation to our organization helps to ensure that our unhoused neighbors are treated with dignity and respect in the greater Portland metro community. Everyone has a place at Operation Nightwatch. Through community and relationship building, over a cup of coffee and through tears and laughter, we invite our guests back night after night to simply be together.
“Hospitality is not to change people, but to offer them space where change can take place.”
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
The nature of our work at Operation Nightwatch is inherently anti-oppressive, as we strive to treat some of the most marginalized members of our society with dignity and care. But we are particularly proud of our newest program that supports people with marginalized gender identities to safely connect with housing resources to facilitate better long-term housing placement. Additionally, we make decisions using an equity lens, and constantly strive to become more diverse and consistently inclusive.
