Operation Nightwatch - Portland

Operation Nightwatch provides evening hospitality for Portland’s unhoused population to promote community, dignity, and social connection.

Bottom Line for Portland

If you didn't have a roof over your head, where would you go to...

- use the bathroom or wash your face?

- get out of the rain, the heat, or the cold?

- find simple things like socks, blankets, or a hot cup of coffee?

- charge your phone?

- relax and maybe even meet some friends?
Where could you go to feel some semblance of dignity and safety?

For thousands of people living on Portland's streets, Operation Nightwatch provides this place. Our dedicated staff and friendly volunteers welcome our unhoused neighbors to our Downtown Hospitality Center every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evening, when other resources are often unavailable and human connection is hard to come by.

It's a simple idea. We believe that treating people with care and respect matters. Every person deserves to feel wanted and safe. At Operation Nightwatch, the relationships we build are at the heart of our mission. Our guests can come inside, meet friends, play games together, and know they are welcome and wanted, just as they are.

Week after week, for over 40 years, we've been here to keep the coffee and the conversations flowing.

Welcome to Operation Nightwatch.

“Hospitality is not to change people, but to offer them space where change can take place.”

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

The nature of our work at Operation Nightwatch is inherently anti-oppressive, as we strive to treat some of the most marginalized members of our society with dignity and care. But we are particularly proud of our newest program that supports people with marginalized gender identities. Additionally, we make decisions using an equity lens, and constantly strive to become more diverse and consistently inclusive.
