NAMI Multnomah

Mission

Through peer leadership, we aim to improve quality of life for people experiencing mental illness through support, education, and advocacy.

Bottom Line for Portland

We are raising funds to support an amazing mental health awareness program for youth in our community. This program, Ending the Silence, has a huge impact on teens who are often resistant to talk about mental health. Here, we go out to middle and high schools, and have young adults share their own mental health stories ~ talking about their own struggles and steps toward personal recovery. We also share information so they can get help for themselves, or recognize when a friend is struggling and guide them toward support.

In addition to this program, funds will support our community helpline, classes, peer and family supports, and crisis intervention services.  Our goal is to connect people with one another and community resources, and to help people achieve their goals.  All of our programs are free-of-charge to participants.

Quote

"I think it is really important that we normalize talking about mental health and illnesses because it is so common and growing up I feel like it was never talked about and was a "not okay" topic."

“I think the presenters are strong, amazing people.  This program lets people know that they are not alone.”

“I think it is awesome that they are presenting this to kids our age because it helps us know how to deal with this type of stuff that may come up in our lives. Thank you so much to the presenters for coming,”

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

It is important to us that the communities we serve are reflected within our staff and volunteers. As a peer-led organization, our staff identify with experiencing a variety of mental health conditions and/or are a loved one to someone who experiences mental health challenges. Additionally, our staff bring a variety of different perspectives stemming from their identities and experiences such as race/ethnicity, LGBTQ+ identifying, and/or Veteran status. This allows us to offer culturally specific services to community members led by people who share their lived experiences.
